Merrick Garland, widely regarded as one of the most polarizing attorneys general in U.S. history, delivered an emotional farewell speech to Justice Department staffers, asserting that his tenure was guided solely by the pursuit of justice—not politics. Critics, however, argue that his track record, particularly his handling of January 6th protesters, tells a different story.

Speaking at the Great Hall of the Department of Justice, Garland proclaimed, “It is the obligation of each of us to follow our norms, not only when it is easy, but also when it is hard, especially when it is hard.” He continued, “It is the obligation of each of us to adhere to our norms, even when and especially when the circumstances we face are not normal.”

The speech, which reportedly lasted 15 minutes, was described by Politico as emotional, with Garland addressing staffers he encouraged to remain steadfast in their commitment to the rule of law, even as leadership transitions in the coming months.
