Senator Adam Schiff found himself in an awkward moment on national television after HBO host Bill Maher confronted him with a statement about presidential war powers that Schiff quickly condemned.
There was just one problem.
The quote Schiff criticized was not from Donald Trump or his administration. It was from Barack Obama.
The exchange unfolded during Friday’s episode of the HBO program Real Time with Bill Maher as the panel debated the expanding U.S. military confrontation with Iran and the ongoing debate in Washington over presidential authority to launch military operations.
Schiff, who has been among the loudest Democrats accusing Trump of exceeding his constitutional authority, argued that the president launched military action without proper authorization from Congress. Democrats in Washington have recently pushed a War Powers Resolution designed to limit the administration’s ability to continue military operations.
During the discussion, Maher challenged Schiff by reading a legal justification used by a presidential administration to defend military action overseas. The host asked Schiff whether the language was too broad.
