ActBlue, the Democratic Party’s powerful online fundraising platform, is facing renewed scrutiny after announcing a new passport verification program designed to strengthen its screening of overseas donors.
The announcement comes after congressional investigators questioned the platform’s previous safeguards and its ability to prevent potentially illegal foreign contributions. It also raises fresh questions about earlier assurances from ActBlue leadership that its donation screening procedures were sufficiently robust.
Rather than putting the controversy to rest, the new policy has prompted Republican lawmakers to argue that their concerns about the platform’s verification procedures were justified.
House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil was among those who quickly challenged ActBlue’s latest move.
