A Major Democrat Just Stepped Away From 2028

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is putting an end—at least for now—to speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run, making clear she does not intend to join what is already expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field.

The comments came Thursday during an interview with WJBK-TV (Fox 2), conducted on the front porch of the historic Grand Hotel during the annual Mackinac Policy Conference, a high-profile political gathering that regularly draws national figures, donors, and party operatives to Mackinac Island.

While the setting was filled with political buzz and quiet presidential chatter, Whitmer used the moment to draw a firm line regarding her future ambitions.

“There will be a robust group of people running for president; I will not be one of them in 2028, I can tell you that,” Whitmer told Fox 2’s Roop Raj.
