Patel Confirms the Crackdown
Kash Patel, former Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense, took to X to announce the arrests, stating:
“These individuals have been charged with stealing America’s defense intelligence capabilities and empowering adversaries like China in betrayal of our country.”
He added, “They will now face American justice.”
Patel had previously vowed that those who pose a threat to national security—whether foreign or domestic—would be held accountable. This latest move proves that commitment is being taken seriously.
How Deep Does the Treason Go?
The scale of the conspiracy is staggering. According to the indictment, Jian Zhao, an Army Supply Sergeant, conspired to steal and sell classified military documents, including those marked “SECRET” and “TOP SECRET.”
Authorities allege Zhao negotiated with individuals in China, attempting to sell stolen hard drives and sensitive military information related to U.S. weapon systems such as HIMARS and military readiness in the event of conflict with China. In exchange, he reportedly accepted payments totaling at least $15,000.
Meanwhile, Tian and Duan are accused of conspiring since 2021 to gather and transmit military intelligence, including classified documents related to U.S. Army weapon systems like the Bradley and Stryker fighting vehicles. Tian allegedly funneled this critical data to Duan in return for money.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi minced no words about the severity of the case:
“The defendants arrested today are accused of betraying our country, actively working to weaken America’s defense capabilities and empowering our adversaries in China. They will face swift, severe, and comprehensive justice.”
The FBI Sounds the Alarm
FBI Director Kash Patel also weighed in, emphasizing the growing threat posed by China’s aggressive intelligence operations:
“While bribery and corruption have thrived under China’s Communist Party, this behavior cannot be tolerated with our service members who are entrusted with sensitive military information, including national defense information.”
He further vowed that the FBI would continue working with Army Counterintelligence to root out any other individuals who may be assisting China in undermining American security.
Military Leadership Condemns the Act
Brigadier General Rhett R. Cox, Commanding General of the Army Counterintelligence Command, also addressed the betrayal, reminding all service members of their duty to protect national security:
“These arrests underscore the persistent and increasing foreign intelligence threat facing our Army and nation.”
He continued, “Along with the Department of Justice and FBI, Army Counterintelligence Command will continue to work tirelessly to hold those accountable who irresponsibly and selfishly abandon the Army values and choose personal gain over duty to our nation.”
