While Thune’s office refused to confirm vote counts, Senate Armed Services Chairman Roger Wicker suggested Hegseth’s confirmation hearing is set for January 14th, giving him just under a week to prepare. If successful, Hegseth’s confirmation would signal growing GOP unity behind Trump’s key nominees.
Ratcliffe’s Record: A Double-Edged Sword
John Ratcliffe, 59, brings extensive experience to the table, having served as Trump’s final Director of National Intelligence (DNI) from 2020 to 2021. His tenure, however, was not without controversy. Ratcliffe faced criticism for the federal government’s inadequate preparation for the January 6th Capitol breach, a day that will forever mark his legacy.
Some Republican senators have questioned whether Ratcliffe politicizes intelligence, citing his disclosures and leaks. Despite this, his 2020 confirmation hearings saw evidence introduced to counter those claims, suggesting Ratcliffe was acting in good faith as DNI.
Before joining the Trump administration, Ratcliffe served as an antiterrorism official under President George W. Bush and later as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas. His political career took off in 2015 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. More recently, Ratcliffe has contributed to conservative think tanks like the Heritage Foundation and Project 2025.
