The situation escalated in May 2024 when Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion to vacate Johnson’s speakership. Her dissatisfaction stemmed from Johnson’s reliance on Democrat support to pass key spending bills. In a surprising twist, House Democrats, led by Jeffries, voted to table Greene’s motion in exchange for a Ukraine aid agreement.
