A tax preparer once dubbed “The Magician” for his ability to seemingly erase tax obligations has been exposed as a fraudster who orchestrated a decade-long scheme to deceive the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Rafael Alvarez, owner and CEO of ATAX New York, LLC, pled guilty to a staggering $145 million tax fraud case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced on Tuesday that Alvarez admitted to one count of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and one count of aiding and assisting in the preparation of fraudulent tax returns.

Operating as a trusted tax preparer, Alvarez led a scheme that spanned ten years, filing an estimated 90,000 fraudulent federal income tax returns. The filings, packed with false information, were designed to unlawfully reduce clients’ tax burdens. Acting U.S. Attorney Edward Y. Kim didn’t mince words: “There was no magic to what Alvarez was doing — he was committing a serious federal crime by falsifying tens of thousands of tax returns and, in the process, depriving the IRS of $145 million in tax revenue.”
