Speaker Mike Johnson’s latest proposal to avoid a government shutdown has ignited fierce criticism from two of the most influential voices on the right—former President Donald Trump and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk. The spending resolution, set to be voted on before Friday’s shutdown deadline, is facing backlash for including provisions that conservatives argue betray Republican principles.
Controversial Provisions in the CR
Johnson’s proposed Continuing Resolution (CR) has raised eyebrows, not only for its timing but for its content. Reports suggest the resolution includes contentious measures such as a congressional pay raise, exemptions allowing lawmakers to opt out of Obamacare, and funding for State Department programs accused of censoring conservative viewpoints.

Another provision buried in the resolution has also sparked alarm. It reportedly mandates courts to “quash or modify any legal process directed to the provider for a House office if compliance… would require the disclosure of House data of the House office.” Critics argue this could shield congressional records from public scrutiny and accountability.
