In an effort to cement control of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Schumer pushed for the confirmation of Lauren McFerran, a nominee strongly backed by Big Labor. The NLRB plays a pivotal role in shaping labor policies, and with McFerran at the helm, Democrats hoped to secure an advantage for union leaders, potentially lasting well into the first year of a Republican administration.

A Democrat-led NLRB would have empowered union bosses to push through labor-friendly rules, allowing for greater unionization efforts and increased influence over workers. However, Schumer’s plans hit a brick wall when Senators Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) unexpectedly joined Republicans to block McFerran’s confirmation.
