Mayorkas made it clear that he believes Congress needs to expand the government’s authority to deal with the growing drone problem. “Those authorities need to be expanded,” he said, calling for legislative support to address the potential risks posed by drones.
However, the current federal response seems to rely heavily on local law enforcement and existing technology. Mayorkas explained, “We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection.”

This isn’t the first time the Biden administration has been criticized for its handling of aerial threats. In early 2023, a Chinese spy balloon traversed the continental United States before being shot down over the Atlantic Ocean. Reports later revealed the administration had attempted to keep the incident under wraps until it became public knowledge.
