“The blue wall isn’t actually as blue as they think,” Plouffe remarked, pointing to a deeper issue.
Plouffe highlighted a critical miscalculation: conservatism holds more sway than liberalism in many battleground states. Using Pennsylvania as an example, Plouffe noted that 34% of voters identified as conservative compared to just 25% who considered themselves liberal. This trend, he explained, isn’t unique to Pennsylvania but reflects a broader reality in swing states, where conservatives often outnumber liberals by an even larger margin.
“By the way, in most battleground states, that conservative number is over 40. So, in every battleground state, there’s more conservatives than liberals,” Plouffe stated.
This revelation punctured the left’s narrative that issues like open borders, unfettered abortion access, and aggressive transgender policies were winning platforms.
A key takeaway from Plouffe’s analysis is that Democrats can’t win swing states without dominating the moderate vote. Harris, however, struggled with this demographic due to her past support for polarizing policies, such as banning fracking and endorsing gender-affirming surgeries for prisoners.
“So, in Pennsylvania, if exits are believed, Trump won conservatives 91-8, Harris won liberals 93-6. Moderates, Harris won 56-43, but you kind of got to win 60% of them, right?” Plouffe added, illustrating how slim margins with moderates spelled disaster for the campaign.
Plouffe also addressed another significant challenge: turning out key voter bases. In cities like Milwaukee, the Harris campaign hit turnout targets, but they underperformed in critical areas like Philadelphia and Detroit. This lackluster turnout, particularly among Black male voters, contributed to their downfall.

“You want to maximize your base, of course… Fell a little bit short in Philly and Detroit, so that’s not good, that’s part of the equation,” Plouffe acknowledged.
Looking ahead, Plouffe offered a sobering message to Democrats. He urged the party to abandon its toxic, far-left positions and reclaim moderate voters to have any hope of winning in 2026 and beyond.
“You’ve got to couple that with dominating in the middle, not just winning it a little. We have to dominate the moderate vote… particularly where you have seen drift amongst non-college voters generally—particularly those of color, specifically—we obviously have to get some of that back,” Plouffe concluded.

As Democrats sift through the wreckage of their 2024 campaign, one thing is clear: the path to victory requires more than rallying the base with progressive policies. Without a sharp pivot to appeal to moderates and address the concerns of swing-state voters, the party risks facing more defeats in the future.
