During his campaign, Trump spotlighted Springfield, which has seen an influx of migrants, suggesting during a presidential debate in September that the newcomers were resorting to eating local residents’ pets.

Trump’s exact words were: “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats. They’re eating the pets of the people that live there.” This remark not only stirred controversy but also inspired a TikTok song that became an instant hit.

Margery Koveleski, who is of Haitian descent, explained to The Guardian the practical challenges some migrants face: “Some folks don’t have credit cards or access to the internet, and they want to buy a bus ticket or a plane ticket, so we help them book a flight. People are leaving.”
