Parkinson recounted one particularly concerning case involving an elderly voter who “had to press her chosen candidate’s name four times before it stopped switching her vote to the opposing candidate.” He raised concerns that many voters might not notice this glitch and could end up casting their ballot for the wrong candidate without realizing it.
The claims of vote flipping aren’t isolated incidents. Parkinson noted that these irregularities were reported by voters across multiple precincts, affecting 10 to 12 locations in Shelby County.

Though the issues have been mostly reported by Democrats, Parkinson assumed that Republican voters might be encountering the same problems, stating, “The only calls we’ve received have been from Democrats reporting that their votes switched to Republican.”
Vanecia Kimbrow echoed Parkinson’s concerns, citing reports from several precincts. However, she attempted to downplay the situation, attributing the problem to the sensitivity of the voting machines and voter error, explaining that the machines should have been operated with styluses to prevent calibration issues. Kimbrow stated that many voters were unaware of this and may have caused the malfunction by using their hands.
Kimbrow stressed that the problem was likely not intentional, attributing the malfunctions to improper use. “The equipment is very sensitive, and it’s fairly brand new. It’s doing what it’s supposed to do; we just need to use the equipment as it was designed,” Kimbrow said.

She assured voters that any malfunctioning machines would be removed and replaced if necessary. However, the fact that such issues arose at all has many Democrats questioning the preparedness of local election officials. State Representative Hardaway criticized Shelby County Election Administrator Linda Phillips, accusing her of not doing enough to prepare voters and poll workers for the election.

Despite these concerns, Election Administrator Linda Phillips has pushed back on the allegations. In a statement to Action News 5, Phillips insisted that no irregularities had been identified and that voters should take the time to carefully review their ballots before submitting them.
“We are fully dedicated to ensuring a smooth and transparent voting process. So far, no irregularities have been identified,” Phillips said. “We strongly encourage all voters to carefully review their ballots before casting them. Poll workers are available at all precincts to provide assistance when needed.”
Phillips also reminded voters that video tutorials on using the voting machines are available on their website and social media channels.

In light of the potential issues with the voting machines, Hardaway urged voters to remain at their polling stations until they are confident that their votes have been correctly registered. He also advised voters to consider opting for paper ballots if they encounter any difficulties with the machines.
Tennessee Democrats now find themselves in an ironic position. After years of downplaying concerns about election integrity, they are facing a crisis of confidence in the very system they once defended. While election officials work to address the problem, it remains to be seen whether these irregularities will affect the outcome of the election.
For now, voters in Tennessee are being urged to double-check their ballots and ensure their vote goes to the candidate of their choice. As more reports of machine malfunctions surface, the debate over election security is sure to intensify.
