They were part of a larger group of 10 club members there to support the Mets. After clearing security, Moody and her friend were approached by a stadium staffer who told them that they would not be allowed to enter unless they removed their hats.
Moody explained that she tried to assert her First Amendment rights during the confrontation, emphasizing that her hat represented her political beliefs, which should be protected under the Constitution. However, the staffer told her the hat was deemed “too political,” and they were asked to take it off before entering.
Unwilling to disrupt the experience for the rest of their group, Moody and her friend reluctantly complied, removing their hats to avoid further conflict. Still, the incident left Moody feeling singled out, and she continued to protest the decision.
Moody, who is Black, believes she was racially and politically targeted during the incident. In the legal filing, she detailed how she attempted to de-escalate the situation by asking if she could simply put the hat in her bag. However, the staffer responded that this was not an option, stating, “No because you can put the hat back on when you get to your seat. You have to take the MAGA hat out of the Stadium.”
At that point, Moody requested to speak with a supervisor, believing that she was being unfairly treated based on both her race and political affiliation. The lawsuit goes on to accuse the Mets organization of failing to uphold her rights and asserts that the situation inflicted emotional distress.
Though Moody and her group complied with the request to remove their MAGA hats, the ordeal didn’t end there. Just days after the incident, on August 17, a representative from the New York Mets contacted Moody to apologize. The representative assured her that “there is no such policy against wearing a MAGA hat, and the Staff has been retrained.” However, the apology has not been enough to mitigate the damage caused, according to Moody, who believes her experience left lasting emotional and reputational effects.

Moody, now representing herself in court, is seeking $2 million in damages from both the Mets and Citi Field. The lawsuit highlights not only the alleged violation of her free speech rights but also broader concerns about political expression and its treatment in public spaces.
