On Monday, Bongino voiced his deep suspicions about the incident, questioning how Routh could have known about Trump’s unannounced golf game. “I have to ask you all a really troubling question now that I promised you 10 years ago I would have called myself nuts for asking this,” Bongino said. “Is there a mole inside the DHS or Secret Service?”

Bongino’s question reflects a growing concern about insider threats in federal agencies, especially after several documented cases of foreign nationals and governments attempting to infiltrate U.S. intelligence and security services. He referenced a specific case in which two individuals were convicted of impersonating federal agents in an effort to deceive the Secret Service.

Bongino explained the Secret Service jargon used for Trump’s trip to the golf course, which was referred to as an “OTR” — an off-the-record movement. This means the golf game wasn’t on any official schedule, and only a select few people were aware of it. “What makes me even more curious about what happened yesterday is apparently the decision to golf was made at the last minute. Meaning, there were probably – when the decision was made, less than 10 people who knew about it. How’d this guy know to set up there?” Bongino added.

Adding to the puzzle, Routh, originally from North Carolina but residing in Hawaii at the time of the incident, was unfamiliar with the area. This raises even more questions about how he was able to position himself so accurately. Bongino speculated that a mole could have provided this information, but he urged viewers not to overthink it. “Folks, the mole may not be a foreign national himself. I don’t want you to think Jason Bourne stuff. Don’t overcomplicate what doesn’t need to be overcomplicated,” he said.

Bongino even suggested that there might be a “honeypot trap” within the Secret Service, where an agent or DHS personnel could be unknowingly involved with someone working against U.S. interests. He cited similar operations carried out by Iranian intelligence, which have targeted officials in Israel and other countries. “How do we know that there’s not some kind of honeypot trap and that some agent or some DHS personnel, someone who has to be notified, is not in a relationship with someone?” Bongino posited.

This isn’t the first time Bongino has raised concerns about Trump’s safety. Following an assassination attempt in July — where a bullet narrowly missed Trump’s head and killed a retired firefighter — Bongino warned that a second attempt was inevitable due to unresolved security vulnerabilities. During an August field hearing, he criticized the Secret Service for outdated tactics and its focus on diversity initiatives at the expense of performance.

“[If] you think this is the last incident, you’re out of your mind,” Bongino told lawmakers, predicting further attempts if security issues remained unaddressed.

In his testimony, Bongino also pointed to the agency’s lack of modern technology, particularly the absence of drone surveillance at key events. At a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, he noted that the agency failed to deploy drones, which could have been purchased for as little as $39.99 on Amazon.

As the investigation into this latest attempt on Trump’s life continues, Bongino’s remarks have sparked intense debate over the possibility of insider threats and the urgent need for reform within the Secret Service and DHS. With two assassination attempts already in the rearview, the question remains: how secure is Donald Trump’s future?
