The Air Line Pilots Association International (ALPA), representing a global network of over 70,000 pilots, has recently aimed its efforts toward bolstering diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) standards. The organization’s 2021 DEI language guide highlights a shift away from traditional terminology deemed non-inclusive, advocating for significant linguistic updates across the aviation industry.
Central to ALPA’s new language proposals is the replacement of several commonly used terms. The term “cockpit,” historically tied to the intense combat zones of early flight decks, is suggested to be updated to “flight deck” to avoid potential derogatory interpretations that may seem to marginalize women. Similarly, the guide recommends substituting “manpower” with “people power” or “human power,” aligning with a more gender-neutral approach. This move extends to general address forms such as “guys,” which the guide advises against, recommending more inclusive group designations.

Moreover, the union’s guide extends its inclusivity to family-related terms, proposing neutral alternatives like “parent” instead of “mother/father” and “partner” in place of “husband/wife.” This is to accommodate and respect the diversity found within modern familial structures, including those of same-sex couples.
