A report from the Pew Research Center in April highlighted that a large majority of voters aged 18 to 24 lean toward the Democrats. This preference traditionally shifts only as demographics age into their 50s. Despite this advantage, emerging data suggests President Joe Biden should not take the support of younger voters for granted in the upcoming general election.
According to a poll conducted by Blueprint from April 27 to April 29, which surveyed 943 voters between the ages of 18 and 30 with a margin of error of 5.8 percentage points, there are cracks in the expected patterns. While young voters generally align with Biden on issues like healthcare and anti-corruption, Trump has emerged as the preferred candidate on two significant concerns: inflation and immigration.
Evan Roth Smith, the lead pollster for Blueprint, noted, “Young voters ideologically tend to be closer to Joe Biden than Donald Trump. However, it’s very notable that on the biggest issues of this election, inflation and immigration, young voters show a clear preference for Trump.”
This finding is particularly troubling for Biden as the poll also revealed that economic issues, including inflation and general economic management, are top priorities for young voters. The poll results show that a staggering 50% of respondents desire lower prices, yet only 13% believe Biden is adequately addressing this concern, compared to 32% for Trump.
Despite Trump’s challenges in winning over the collegiate crowd, his perceived competence on these key issues could significantly impact the election dynamics. In a contest as potentially tight as the 2024 election, every vote is crucial, and losing support on these critical issues could be a significant setback for Biden.

The political landscape for 2024 is being actively shaped by the experiences and perceptions of young voters who had high hopes for change under Biden’s administration. Disappointment in the current administration’s performance, especially on pivotal issues like the economy and border security, is leading some to reconsider their options.
As the election approaches, the importance of each vote escalates. For Trump, gaining ground on these issues could prove to be a decisive advantage. For Biden, it represents a vulnerability that needs urgent attention if he hopes to retain the loyalty of a traditionally Democratic-leaning age group. The shift in young voter sentiment signals a potentially transformative moment in American politics, as the youth increasingly vote not just on ideals, but on the pressing issues affecting their futures.
