Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) put an end to rumors on Friday by announcing categorically that he will not seek the presidency in 2024 as an independent challenger to President Biden.
“I will not be seeking a third-party run,” said in Morgantown, West Virginia, during a speech. “I will not be involved in a presidential run.”

Following his declaration in November that he would not run for reelection, there was much conjecture about Manchin’s 76-year-old political future. He had thought about running for No Labels, a centrist group hoping to field a third party candidate in the next Biden-Trump contest.
“I will not be a deal breaker or a spoiler,” Manchin stated.
The majority leader, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), allegedly urged Manchin to quit the Democratic Party and compete for a Senate seat as an independent following Manchin’s declaration that he would not be seeking reelection, according to the New York Times.
In West Virginia, the deadline for filing to enter a Senate primary was in January. On the other hand, independent candidates have till August 1 to declare their candidacies.
Democrats have acknowledged that they are unlikely to hold the Senate seat in West Virginia, a state that leans heavily Republican, without Manchin. As they fight for many Senate seats in states where Trump won, they will have a difficult time holding onto their majority.
Manchin has been the Senate’s swing vote for a very long time. Manchin has sided with Democrats on certain significant issues and voted with Republicans on others since his first election in 2010.
