Cynthia Dunbar of the prayer group Intercessors for America received a message from God regarding Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, which was a startling turn of events. Johnson was chosen by all Republicans to succeed Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted as speaker earlier this month, as the 56th speaker.
The speaker’s chair has been vacant for 22 days, which has prevented the House from passing any legislation. It is significant to remember that the speaker comes in second in the order of presidential succession, just after the vice president.
Rep. Jim Jordan, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise were first proposed by the GOP but failed to garner enough votes on the House floor to be approved.
The Republican House members’ unequivocal support for Johnson on Tuesday night was the turning point. Johnson won without a doubt despite finishing second behind Emmer in the GOP selection ballot earlier that day.
Dunbar just shared a surprising revelation from God about Johnson in an essay on the website of Intercessors for America. This information was discovered before Johnson became a serious contender, which makes his tale more intriguing.
I was in solitary meditation on that special Saturday, October 21, 2023, praying diligently for the wellbeing of our world and nation when suddenly, a powerful message from the Almighty broke the silence and struck a chord within me:
“’Pray boldness over Congressman Michael Johnson in this season. Pray that he may walk in strength tempered in grace, that he may boldly speak forth truth, and that his words will be a beacon of hope to the nation.’”
Dunbar continued, “I then called a friend, a solid Christian who is congressional district director for another congressman, and told her what I had heard.”

“She informed me that Rep. Johnson’s name was not even being considered for speaker, and she was curious as to why I was praying this specifically over him,” Dunbar recalled.
The buddy decided to pray with her for Johnson when she stated clearly, “Because the Lord has instructed me to pray for him.”
“Fast-forward to Wednesday afternoon. I received a call from this same friend with whom I had prayed Saturday. She was in tears as she told me that the vote to elect Congressman Michael Johnson as the next speaker of the House of Representatives had been UNANIMOUS within the party!” Dunbar wrote.
“She then explained to me what few would understand, but which intercessors need to know: Given the climate in the House of Representatives right now, a unanimous vote was humanly impossible. This vote was a miracle and an answer to prayer!”
Her buddy relayed Dunbar’s message to others on Capitol Hill who also prayed for Johnson.
Dunbar noted, “Rep. Johnson has even stated personally that he had been praying, and that even though he had never considered running, on Saturday the Lord made it clear to him that he was to run.”
Unexpectedly, Rep. Elise Stefanik, chair of the GOP Conference, proposed Johnson as speaker on Wednesday for the very reason that Dunbar prayed for him—boldness.
“The times in which we are living demand boldness, unity and transformational leadership that begins with trust in God and each other,” she said.
“In the story of King David, we are reminded that ‘man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the people’s House.”
Dunbar strongly hoped that Johnson’s statements would be a glimmer of optimism for the country.
On Wednesday, the newly elected speaker gave a moving acceptance speech that was filled with optimism and warmly applauded by the audience.
“We are the beacon of freedom, and we must preserve this grand experiment in self-governance,” the Louisiana Republican said.
“I genuinely believe in my heart that the best days of America are still ahead of us,” he added.
He also openly discussed God with his colleagues Congressmen, saying, “I don’t believe there are any coincidences in a matter like this.”
“I believe that Scripture, the Bible, is very clear that God is the one that raises up those in authority,” Johnson continued. “He raised up each of you, all of us. And I believe that God has ordained and allowed each one of us to be brought here for this specific moment and this time.”
He said that their duty is to defend and uphold our republic as a stand-in for freedom, hope, and light in a dark world.
On Friday, Dunbar’s friend and Christian leader Dutch Sheets saw her piece on his “Give Him 15” initiative. He stated: “God has given us a miracle in the election of Congressman Michael Johnson to this position. He’s a godly man, raised up for such a time as this.”
Sheets prayed for God to give Johnson “great grace to lead in this very turbulent time and great boldness. You have prepared him; we know you will now lead him. May he be a beacon of hope for America.”
Johnson’s promotion to speaker is the ideal illustration of how God operates in a mysterious way.
