By abolishing cash bail with a new “criminal justice reform” statute, Illinois creates history. The Pre-Trial Fairness Act results in improvements.
For small transgressions, new legislation means no jail time, even after an arrest! In lieu of the intimidating police station procedure, offenders will only be issued a ticket and a court date.
Only when they are unable to identify them or if they constitute a threat to the community may law enforcement officers place someone in custody. The police are required to explain their decision if someone is held.
Judges will determine if the detained individual constitutes a risk to public safety. They won’t need to post monetary bail if they are considered safe and will be freed straight away.
State’s Attorney for Cook County Kim Foxx told ABC 7 Chicago that her agency is eager to implement the new rules. “What is so fearful of having a system that is fair and just? What is so disarming about making sure people are not detained because they are poor,” Foxx said. “I can assure you that the Cook County States Attorneys Office, stands ready to implement the Pre-Trial Fairness Act.”
Others have fiercely opposed the plan, citing a number of locations where the abolition of cash bail has been attributed to large increases in major crime, including New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. “We feel very strongly that it is a serious public safety issue,” James Glasgow, state’s attorney for Will County, stated. “At the same time, we want to join in the fight toward reforming bail.”

Politicians from Chicago declared that Illinois is emerging as a national leader in criminal justice reform after the bill went into effect on Monday. “The full implementation of the Pretrial Fairness Act and the end of money bond is a critical milestone on the path toward economic and racial justice in Cook County and Illinois. This important reform is long overdue,” remarked Toni Preckwinkle, president of the Cook County Board. “Today, we finally end the harmful practice of wealth-based pretrial incarceration and welcome a new system that centers community safety to better guarantee equal justice for all.”
Seems like these liberal “no bail” cities and states will have to learn the lesson the hard way. Unfortunately it is the population that will pay the ultimate price, …. with their lives in some cases. With severe bodily harm in many other cases. First they ban guns, then they create a revolving door, for serial criminals. So, law abiding citizens are just BAIT for these scumbag thugs. Goid move you idiot lawmakers.
