Known for his liberal principles, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently spoke with NBC’s Chuck Todd on the Democratic Party’s current presidential primary and whether he would think about running against President Joe Biden in 2024.
When asked if he thought he would be a stronger candidate for the party’s nomination than the incumbent, Gov. Newsom remained evasive, despite his strident calls for Biden to take more progressive positions on student debt and gun control.
“I think we need to move past this notion that [Biden] is not going to run. President Biden is going to run and looking forward to getting reelected. I think there’s been so much wallowing and hand-wringing in the last few months,” Newsom said.
Governor Newsom gladly embraced the role of a positive warrior when Todd questioned whether Todd’s comments indicated support for Biden’s campaign, or possibly for Vice President Kamala Harris in the case that Biden does not run.
“It’s the Biden-Harris administration. Maybe I’m a little old fashioned about presidents and vice presidents,” he added.
This should be interpreted as a sign that the California Democrat will not run for the party’s candidacy next year.

Because of his support for a 28th amendment to the U.S. constitution that would outlaw assault weapons, Governor Newsom has attracted widespread attention. He has launched print and online ads to spread the word about his cause and ask people to sign a petition to get Congress to act. Former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom is highly known for his progressive views, making him a potential left-leaning opponent for a Democratic president who is struggling to keep the support of young people and voters of color.

President Biden still confronts a tough opponent in Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., an ardent member of the illustrious Democratic family, notwithstanding Newsom’s decision to withdraw. Biden has a huge challenge in his quest for the nomination because of Kennedy’s unexpected popularity in crucial states. By demanding a probe into Biden’s potential involvement in dubious plans with his son and other family members while serving as vice president, he has caused a stir. The competition is far from done.
