SCOTUS Rules: $400B Student Loan Relief Is Dead in the Water

The Biden administration’s decision to hold the federal government accountable for the unpaid student loans of numerous Americans was ruled by the Supreme Court to have exceeded its constitutional authority.

President Joe Biden’s $400 billion proposal suffers a deadly blow as a result of the 6-3 ruling by conservative justices. Now, borrowers are accountable for the debts they obtained.

It’s predicted that repayments will start up again in the late summer.

The administration must get Congress’ consent before adopting such a costly scheme, the court decided.

The majority of Americans rejected the notion that President Biden had the power he asserted he did under the contentious 2003 law known as the HEROES Act, which deals with student loans.

“Six States sued, arguing that the HEROES Act does not authorize the loan cancellation plan. We agree,” for the court, Chief Justice John Roberts penned an essay.

The majority of the court, according to Justice Elena Kagan and the court’s two other liberals in dissent, “overrides the combined judgment of the Legislative and Executive Branches, with the consequence of eliminating loan forgiveness for 43 million Americans.”

According to the agreed upon plan to lift the debt ceiling, loan repayments will start up again in late August.

Since the start of the extraordinary worldwide health crisis more than three years ago, payment processing has been put on indefinite hold.
