Nurse’s Defamation Lawsuit Rocks Social Media

After allegedly attempting to steal a Citi-bike from a group of young black males in New York, a pregnant nurse was accused of being a White Supremacist. She was given a leave of absence from work when the incident became widely publicized. Twitter’s “Community Notes,” nevertheless, allowed concerned social media users to contest the veracity of the allegations.

The nurse who was accused of stealing a bike was found not guilty after producing convincing proof that the bike belonged to her. In an unexpected turn of events, the attorney for the healthcare worker recently declared their plan to sue the media for labelling his client a bigot and a thief. This action attempts to demonstrate the necessity of defamation laws and their commitment to seeking redress for their client.

“We are aware of the video involving a health care provider off duty and away from the hospital campus,” the woman’s employer tweeted on Tuesday. “The incident in the video is disturbing. The provider is currently out on leave and will remain on leave pending a review. As a health system we are committed to providing an environment for our patients and staff that is free from discrimination of any kind.”

The video was flagged by Twitter’s community notes, which made sure to correct individuals who had accused the woman:

The woman has sent her attorney receipts proving that she paid for the bike. A receipt obtained by Insider reveals that a Citi Bike was purchased on the evening of May 12 in Manhattan. The receipt reveals that the bicycle was returned to its dock only a minute after it was first locked up, with no additional fees being noted.

The woman’s attorney, Justin Marino, stated, “It was her bike,” in an interview with Insider on Thursday.

The young Black male and his companions informed the woman, a pregnant NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue employee, that the man had already paid for the same bike, according to Marino, who said that the bike was pushed back into its docking station.

According to Marino, who spoke to Insider, “She had reserved it, and then they pushed the bike back into the docking station, preventing her from taking it out again.”

One minute after the first Citi Bike was relocked, a second bike was taken from the same docking station, according to another receipt sent to Insider. Also included on that ticket was a 25-minute drive that Marino claimed his client took to get home following the incident.

“I’m hoping the employer will not violate her rights and will do what’s right and bring her back at some point,” Marino said, adding that his client was planning to sue “against individuals and media organizations who defamed her.”
