On the Tetragrammaton podcast, he disclosed this unexpected fact, upsetting supporters’ expectations and shedding additional insight on his relationship with the league.
Jackson gave a solid response to Rick Rubin’s question. “No. I don’t,” making it appear like being competitive in the league was no longer important to him.
Jackson bemoaned the NBA’s recent initiatives to include social justice messages in their games, feeling that this was inappropriate for a sport that should be centered on competitiveness since it was too politically charged. An effort that seems to have generated more discord than unity among basketball fans was the wearing of Black Lives Matter shirts by players and the covering of the courts with woke messages.
“They had things on their back like ‘Justice’ and a funny thing happened,” Jackson answered. “Like ‘Justice went to the basket and Equal Opportunity knocked him down’ . . . Some of my grandkids thought it was pretty funny to play up those names. I couldn’t watch that.”
According to Jackson, Americans use sports as a diversion from politics.
“They even had slogans on the floor, on the baseline. It was catering. It was trying to cater to an audience, or trying to bring a certain audience into play. And they didn’t know it was turning other people off. People want to see sports as non-political,” Jackson added.
Jackson used the example of Bill Bradley, a New Jersey native and former senator who played with him on the Knicks and is an NBA Hall of Famer. This was particularly significant for Jackson as a reminder that one may succeed in both athletics and politics without needing to combine them.
“Bill Bradley was a Senator, a number of baseball players have been Representatives and Senators … But their politics stay out of the game,” Jackson said. “It doesn’t need to be there.”
