Lydia Booth showed her faith and remained determined to share the words of encouragement that were so meaningful to her with others, even though the circumstances around her were unclear. The little Mississippian student, who was in the third grade, took great pride in wearing a face mask that said, “Jesus Loves Me,” since it was a state requirement.
When Lydia’s school district made the announcement that they would not allow her to wear the face mask that she cherished so much, both Lydia and her mother Jennifer were taken aback. The announcement, which came as a shock to both parties, contributed to the gloomy mood that prevailed around the home since it put both of their unique relationships to the test.

She said that to Fox News Digital, she said “I was looking around, and all these kids had words all over their masks.”
Following a lawsuit that was brought on behalf of the Booth family by Alliance Defending Freedom, the Simpson County school system decided to do away with its policy that prohibited face masks that included “political” or “religious” themes. Lydia’s usage of a “Jesus Loves Me” mask in her classroom during the COVID-19 outbreak in October of last year was the event that led to legal action being taken against her.
Lydia’s family filed a lawsuit, which was supported by Alliance Defending Freedom, after their daughter was requested to remove a religious mask that she has worn in the past without causing any problems. In the lawsuit, it was claimed that the expulsion was unfair, and it was pointed out that other students had worn words on their masks without meeting any objection from the school’s administration or professors. When Lydia attempted to enter the cafeteria later in the day, she was once again asked to leave.
Michael Ross, ADF Legal Counsel, gave an interview to Fox News Digital. “The First Amendment prohibits schools from singling out students for their speech, especially religious speech,” Ross continued.”It’s very simple: What the school was doing is a flat violation of the First Amendment.”
Lydia said “I chose [the mask] because it had my favorite words on it, ‘Jesus Loves Me,’ and it made me feel safe when I went to school.”
Recently, the Booth family and the school district came to an arrangement that was friendly, and as a result, kids are now permitted to exhibit political and religious statements on their face masks. Lydia and her mother were delighted with the results of their labor, which resulted in others having more freedom of speech as a result of their efforts and were satisfied with those results.
Lydia’s mother, Jennifer added “It went from talking to the principal and it being about the dress code, then all the way up to the superintendent, they modified the policy to a ban on religious speech.”
The perseverance shown by both Lydia and her mother resulted in a change in the school’s policy. As a result, Lydia now has the freedom to continue sharing her beliefs with classmates and to wear a mask if she so chooses. Their accomplishments served as a shining example that perseverance pays off!
“It’s about the little things,” Jennifer added. “Day to day, you don’t notice a change, but five years from now, you’re going to look back to this day and see how drastically everything has changed…If we have a belief, we have a right to share it.”
