A routine traffic stop in Washington State has exposed troubling questions about government hiring practices after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a Kenyan national who had allegedly remained in the United States illegally for seven years while working for the state’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).
The arrest of Stanley Robert Kungu Muthee is raising questions about how someone who allegedly overstayed a tourist visa in 2019 managed to secure a government position in an agency entrusted with protecting vulnerable children.
Even more striking, federal agents reportedly discovered his government employment almost immediately. When officers stopped him, Muthee was wearing a DCYF-branded jacket and carrying an employee identification card.
The incident has put Washington’s hiring procedures under scrutiny and prompted renewed questions about the state’s approach to immigration enforcement.
