Oregon’s long-standing Democratic political establishment is facing renewed scrutiny as Republican Christine Drazan prepares for another challenge against Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek. With polling showing the candidates separated by only a few percentage points, the contest has drawn attention to voter concerns about housing, homelessness, affordability, and the state’s economic direction.
The race is particularly significant given Oregon’s history of Democratic leadership. The state has not elected a Republican governor since 1982, when Republican Victor Atiyeh won another term. Drazan came close to changing that political pattern in 2022, finishing approximately 3.5 percentage points behind Kotek.
Now, the two candidates are once again competing in a closely watched contest, with dissatisfaction over state policies emerging as an important issue.
