A solemn reminder of the risks faced by America’s military community unfolded Saturday in San Antonio, Texas, when an Air Force instructor died after falling during a pregame tribute honoring the nation’s armed forces and veterans.
Technical Sergeant Ian Patterson was participating in a rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome on October 17 when the accident occurred. What was intended to be a patriotic celebration of military service instead became a heartbreaking scene witnessed by thousands of football fans.
The incident happened before the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) hosted the United States Naval Academy in a matchup that drew more than 23,000 spectators.
According to reporting by the San Antonio Express-News, the demonstration required four military personnel to descend approximately 170 feet from the stadium’s rafters toward the football field. During the descent, Patterson appeared to accelerate unexpectedly before striking the turf.
