The FBI has launched a nationwide investigation into a series of suspicious letters sent to government offices, including congressional offices on Capitol Hill and state election agencies, as law enforcement officials scramble to determine what the mail contains and who is responsible.
The alarming incidents have raised fresh concerns about election security with the November 3 elections approaching. Some of the letters reportedly contained unidentified substances, prompting authorities to coordinate an expanding response involving federal investigators, postal inspectors and Capitol Police.
Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin reported Thursday that the FBI had confirmed the investigation. Congressional staff members have also been warned about the suspicious mailings, indicating that the incidents extend beyond state election offices and into the nation’s capital.
In a statement shared by Melugin, an FBI spokesperson confirmed that investigators were working to identify those behind the letters while responding to reports from multiple locations across the country.
