Former Republican Congressman David Rivera is headed to federal prison for a decade following his conviction in a sprawling foreign-lobbying and money-laundering case involving millions of dollars connected to Venezuela’s socialist government.
A federal judge on Friday sentenced the former Florida lawmaker to 10 years behind bars after prosecutors accused Rivera of secretly working to influence American officials on behalf of Venezuelan interests while failing to register as a foreign agent.
U.S. District Judge Melissa Damian handed Rivera a 120-month sentence on five counts, along with 60-month sentences on two additional counts. The sentences will be served concurrently.
