Border czar Tom Homan has delivered a forceful message to a group of migrants traveling through Mexico toward the United States, making clear that the Trump administration intends to enforce its immigration policies if they attempt to enter the country illegally.
The warning comes as a new migrant caravan, consisting of hundreds of people who began their journey in Honduras, makes its way through southern Mexico. With the November midterm elections approaching, the latest migration surge is drawing renewed attention to border security and the administration’s efforts to prevent unauthorized crossings.
More than 400 migrants, predominantly from Honduras, entered Mexico last week with the stated intention of reaching the U.S. border, according to reports from Reuters and other outlets. The group has since continued its journey through Mexican territory.
Homan made clear that reaching American soil would not guarantee the migrants permission to remain in the country.
