Five British men arrested near a strategically important air base used by the U.S. military have been released on bail, but British counterterrorism officials are making clear that the investigation is far from finished.
The arrests came after authorities were alerted to suspicious vehicles near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire during the early hours of Sunday. Armed police responded to the report, launching a major security operation around the base and nearby communities.
The five suspects, all British nationals from London and in their 20s, were initially detained over suspected explosives offenses. Police later arrested them on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under Britain’s terrorism legislation.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, counterterrorism authorities announced Monday that all five men would be released on police bail.
