The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily stopped Missouri from using a Republican-backed congressional map in this November’s elections, delivering a major setback to the effort to redraw the state’s political landscape before the midterms.
In a short order issued Thursday, the justices granted an emergency request brought by People Not Politicians and activist Richard von Glahn. The decision puts a hold on a federal court ruling that would have required Missouri election officials to proceed with the newly drawn districts.
For now, Missouri will conduct the November congressional elections under the map adopted in 2022. The existing boundaries currently produce a 6-2 Republican-to-Democrat split among the state’s eight congressional districts.
