The Trump administration is putting thousands of private educational institutions on notice: changing the language surrounding race-conscious policies will not necessarily protect their federal tax exemptions.
The Treasury Department and IRS have unveiled a proposed rule spelling out when racial discrimination by private schools can jeopardize their tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3).
The policy could affect roughly 18,000 private educational institutions, ranging from major universities to smaller colleges and vocational schools.
