Former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci is facing renewed scrutiny after Sen. Rand Paul released a new batch of emails showing that Fauci repeatedly instructed government officials to delete correspondence.
The documents add another layer to the growing congressional investigation into Fauci’s conduct before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to reporting on the newly released records, Paul’s investigation uncovered at least five instances in which Fauci instructed recipients to erase emails after reading them. The messages span more than a decade, dating back to 2009.
That revelation comes only weeks after Fauci appeared before Paul’s Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on July 29. The hearing quickly became confrontational as Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right and declined to answer questions concerning his handling of the pandemic, the origins of COVID-19 and federal research programs.
