A transgender California software engineer who left the United States after President Donald Trump returned to the White House has come back home following an unsuccessful attempt to obtain asylum in the Netherlands.
Jane-Michelle Arc, 48, traveled to the Netherlands in April 2025 after saying she feared for her safety as a transgender woman in the United States. Months later, however, her effort to build a new life overseas ended with a return to California.
Looking back on the decision, Arc offered an unusually blunt assessment.
