SCOTUS Just Took Up the Biggest Cases Yet

The U.S. Supreme Court has officially mapped out the opening stretch of its next term, and the first slate of cases signals that several of the nation’s biggest legal and political battles are headed back before the justices. Immigration, election-related disputes, environmental litigation, and veterans’ benefits will all be on the docket as the Court begins hearing oral arguments in October.

The early schedule suggests another consequential term for the nation’s highest court, with multiple cases expected to influence how federal agencies operate and how lower courts handle constitutional challenges in the years ahead.

One of the most closely watched cases on the calendar involves immigration enforcement and the limits of federal detention authority. The justices are scheduled to hear Genalo v. Black on Oct. 13, a dispute that could determine whether some illegal immigrants may be held in federal custody for extended periods without receiving a bond hearing before an immigration judge.
