The debate over Chinese ownership of American farmland has once again moved to the forefront after Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins outlined where the Trump administration intends to draw the line between protecting private property rights and defending U.S. national security. Speaking during an appearance on NewsNation’s The Hill, Rollins made clear that President Donald Trump believes farmland located near critical military installations should never fall into the hands of companies tied to the Chinese Communist Party.
The issue has become increasingly significant as lawmakers from both parties continue raising alarms over foreign ownership of land situated close to sensitive military facilities, particularly those connected to America’s nuclear deterrent. Rollins argued that while American farmers deserve the freedom to profit from their property, national security cannot be compromised.
During the interview, host Blake Burman reminded Rollins that she had previously described Chinese purchases of American farmland as a “perilous threat.” He also referenced remarks Trump made following his recent trip to Beijing, prompting questions about whether the president had softened his position on the issue.
