An armed man was taken into custody near the U.S. Capitol on Monday morning after officers discovered he was carrying a firearm at the North Barricade, prompting an immediate security response in one of the nation’s most heavily protected government zones.
The incident quickly led U.S. Capitol Police to restrict access to the area while investigators worked to determine exactly what had unfolded. Staff members and other personnel received an urgent alert instructing them to avoid the North Barricade until authorities declared the scene secure.
Officials confirmed that the suspect was arrested without publicly identifying him or explaining what drew officers’ attention in the first place. Investigators have also not revealed what type of firearm was recovered or whether the individual intended to enter restricted areas surrounding the Capitol complex.
