The Democratic Party’s steady shift toward the political left took another dramatic turn Tuesday night as voters in Colorado delivered a major upset that could send shockwaves through the party’s establishment.
While much of the national attention has focused on the rise of socialist candidates in places like New York City, Colorado has now become the latest battleground where the Democratic Party’s progressive wing scored a significant victory.
In Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, 29-year-old Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros defeated longtime Democrat Rep. Diana DeGette in the party’s primary election, ending the veteran lawmaker’s decades-long hold on the seat.
