Critics on the political left are accusing Trump-aligned reformers of dismantling what they describe as a critical humanitarian program. However, conservatives and reform advocates argue that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) had morphed into a sprawling financial pipeline allegedly used to support political influence operations overseas, including efforts tied to left-leaning governments and organizations.
At the heart of the controversy are claims that USAID funds were previously directed toward politically sensitive programs abroad. Some critics allege the agency functioned as a “slush fund” that influenced elections and supported socialist or progressive movements in various regions, particularly in parts of South America.
