Maine Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing fresh political blowback after a series of old Reddit posts resurfaced online—posts that critics say reveal deeply disturbing and inappropriate commentary involving violent and sensitive subjects, including a teenager’s suicide attempt.
The controversy centers on a 2012 Reddit exchange tied to a widely shared image of a teenage girl who appeared to be attempting to jump from an upper-story window while other students tried to pull her back to safety. The caption accompanying the image described a tragic situation involving loss and intervention.
“A girl at my old high school tried jumping from a window because her cousin died the day before,” the caption read. “These students saved her. I have hope.”
However, Platner—who allegedly used the Reddit username “P-Hustle”—responded with a remark that has drawn intense criticism online.
“Someone clearly isn’t trying hard enough,” the account wrote.
