A new political effort backed by President Donald Trump and several of his allies is quietly gaining attention in Washington as discussions continue over a possible congressional resolution aimed at “expunging” his two impeachments—an extraordinary and largely symbolic step supporters say would correct what they view as politically driven actions taken by Democrats.
According to individuals familiar with the ongoing conversations, some lawmakers are exploring the introduction of a resolution that would formally declare Trump’s 2019 and 2021 impeachments void. While the idea is generating interest in conservative circles, legal experts widely acknowledge it would carry little to no practical effect, since the Constitution does not provide any mechanism for reversing an impeachment once it has been completed by Congress.
Still, Trump himself made clear where he stands on the matter.
“It should be done because I did nothing wrong,” Donald Trump said in a phone interview this week.
He went further in describing his view of the process behind the impeachments.
“It was a rigged deal—it was a whole rigged situation,” he added.
At the same time, Trump attempted to distance himself from directly pushing the effort.
“If they want to do it, I’m honored by it,” he said.
