Zohran Mamdani Stuns Establishment Dems

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is once again at the center of a political firestorm after openly attacking his own party’s establishment and doubling down on one of the most controversial immigration positions in American politics.

During a Saturday appearance on MS NOW’s “The Weekend,” Mamdani reignited his push to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement entirely, declaring that the agency cannot be fixed and should be dismantled outright. His remarks immediately intensified growing tensions inside the Democratic Party, where even some of its most progressive voices have begun to distance themselves from the “Abolish ICE” movement.

When asked about conditions at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, Mamdani used the moment to sharpen his criticism of federal immigration enforcement. He pointed to a hunger strike among detainees and suggested the situation reflected what he called systemic cruelty.

“I think there are a few things,” he said. “One is a reaction of pain at seeing what people have to go through in these kinds of facilities. And these are conditions that – they offend the conscience of so many, not just here in New York City, but frankly across the country. This is partially why I have put forward a vision alongside so many others to say that ICE should be abolished, that there is no way to reform this kind of cruelty that we’re seeing endemic in the way that immigration is being enforced across the country.”
