Supporters of election integrity legislation suffered a major setback Thursday night after the Senate rejected an amendment tied to the SAVE America Act, exposing deep divisions within the Republican conference and raising fresh doubts about the bill’s future.
The vote ended in a 48-50 defeat, with four Republican senators breaking ranks and joining Democrats to oppose the measure. The outcome immediately sparked frustration among conservatives who have spent months pushing for stronger safeguards in federal elections.
The four Republicans who voted against the amendment were Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, and Maine Senator Susan Collins.
Their votes proved decisive in blocking the proposal and highlighted the challenge facing Republican leaders who have promised voters tougher election security measures.
The vote took place during the Senate’s marathon “vote-a-rama” process, where lawmakers consider a long series of amendments tied to larger legislative packages.
