DHS Drops 3-Word Reality Check On Jeffries

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries thought he had found a political winner when he toured a federal immigration detention center in New Jersey and emerged denouncing what he saw inside.

Instead, the Department of Homeland Security delivered a blunt response that quickly shifted the conversation back to a question many Democrats seem eager to avoid.

Why are the people inside the facility there in the first place?

Jeffries visited Delaney Hall in Newark, a large Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center that currently houses migrants awaiting immigration proceedings or removal from the United States. Following the tour, the New York Democrat condemned the facility and argued that it should be closed.

Standing before cameras, Jeffries described conditions he claimed were unacceptable and declared, “This is not America.”

The remark immediately generated headlines and praise from immigration activists. But DHS officials wasted little time pushing back against what they viewed as a one-sided portrayal of the facility.

In a direct response posted online, the agency reminded Jeffries that immigration enforcement is not based on political preference.
