The campaign has since acknowledged the exchanges, confirming aspects of the allegations in a statement to Politico. Reports also indicate that some of the messages were exchanged through the messaging platform Kik and included explicit content.
The scandal is not isolated. Platner has already faced criticism over resurfaced Reddit posts containing crude and controversial remarks, as well as a tattoo that critics say once resembled a Nazi symbol before it was later covered. Together, these issues have created a growing narrative of controversy around a candidate who only recently emerged as a political newcomer in the state.
During an appearance Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” the program This Week, Senator Booker did not dismiss the allegations outright. Instead, he acknowledged that the situation raises legitimate concerns about Platner’s fitness as a candidate.
“Yeah, I have concerns. That guy has questions to answer and that’s what campaigns are for,” Booker said. He then shifted focus toward the broader political stakes in the Senate, but notably stopped short of endorsing Platner or indicating any willingness to campaign on his behalf.
Booker’s comments reflect a growing tension within Democratic leadership as the party tries to balance electoral strategy with emerging controversies tied to one of its candidates in a potentially competitive Senate race.
Other top Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have largely avoided addressing the details of the allegations directly. When pressed by reporters in recent weeks, both have either deflected or declined to comment in depth, even as the situation continues to generate headlines.
The timing is especially sensitive for Democrats in Maine. The state’s Democratic primary is scheduled for June 9, and Platner remains the clear frontrunner to secure the nomination following the suspension of Governor Janet Mills’s campaign. With one major competitor out of the race, Platner has maintained a strong position in polling and fundraising despite the mounting controversies.
However, the latest revelations appear to be influencing perceptions of his general election viability, particularly in a potential matchup against longtime Republican Senator Susan Collins. Political betting markets have already reacted to the developments. On platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi, Platner’s odds have reportedly slipped from earlier highs, signaling growing uncertainty among observers.
Despite the turbulence, public polling still shows Platner with an advantage in the race. A recent University of New Hampshire survey placed him ahead 51% to 42%, suggesting that, for now, voter preference has not fully shifted in response to the controversy.
Still, political analysts note that the combination of personal scandal, resurfaced online activity, and growing scrutiny from national figures could reshape the trajectory of the race in its final stretch. What was once viewed as a potentially favorable pickup opportunity for Democrats is now showing signs of unpredictability as Election Day approaches.
With just days remaining before the primary, the outcome will determine whether Platner’s candidacy stabilizes—or whether the controversy continues to define one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country.
