Now, prosecutors have added another serious charge to the growing list.
According to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, correctional officers recently discovered Medina allegedly carrying a six-inch shank inside the jail.
The discovery led the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office to approve a felony charge for possession of contraband in a penal institution.
The allegation has fueled criticism from those who argue that the criminal justice and immigration systems failed repeatedly before tragedy struck.
The case has already become a major flashpoint in the ongoing national debate surrounding illegal immigration, sanctuary city policies, and public safety.
Supporters of stricter immigration enforcement point to Medina’s case as an example of systemic failures that allowed a dangerous individual to remain in the United States despite being in the country unlawfully.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump invited Sheridan Gorman’s family to speak at a rally in Suffern, New York.
The emotional appearance placed a national spotlight on the young woman’s death.
Sheridan’s parents stood before the crowd alongside family members while holding photographs of the Loyola freshman whose life was cut tragically short.
The grieving family openly questioned how policies they believe prioritize illegal immigrants over citizens could have contributed to the circumstances that led to their daughter’s death.
They also expressed frustration that concerns over public safety and border enforcement have become deeply politicized issues.
Trump addressed the crowd and sharply criticized both the Biden administration and Illinois leadership.
“She was gunned down by an illegal alien monster in cold blood,” Trump told the crowd at Rockland Community College.
“This savage animal, who stole Sheridan’s life, entered illegally from Venezuela and was released into our country by Crooked Joe Biden, and that whole Biden administration of thieves and criminals,” Trump continued.
“He was then arrested and released again by Dumocrat Governor JP Pritzker, a terrible governor, has no idea what’s going on in the sanctuary city of Chicago. Sanctuary cities protect criminals,” said the president.
“They’re a sanctuary for criminals, not for people like you, like us,” he added.
But the most emotional moment of the event came when Sheridan’s mother, Jessica Gorman, stepped forward to speak.
Fighting through tears, she described the pain that has consumed her family since her daughter’s death and thanked those who have worked to bring attention to the case.
“Mother’s Day was just two weeks ago. For most mothers, it meant flowers and cards and phone calls, or children coming home,” she told the crowd.
“For me, it was heartache and tears because on March 19, my beautiful daughter, Sheridan Grace Gorman, was murdered in cold blood,” the distraught mother added.
“No mother should ever have to wonder if her child called out for her in her final moments,” she said.
“No mother should ever have to imagine her baby lying alone and bleeding on the cold pavement, and no family should ever have to bury a child because public officials failed to put innocent American lives first,” she added.
The case continues to draw national attention as prosecutors prepare for trial and as new charges against Medina add another layer to an already highly charged criminal case.
Meanwhile, the broader political battle over immigration remains front and center. Critics of former President Joe Biden have argued that millions of illegal migrants entered the country during his administration, while President Trump has made mass deportations and tougher border enforcement central pillars of his agenda.
For Sheridan Gorman’s family, however, the debate is no longer political. It is deeply personal. As the legal process moves forward, they continue searching for answers while mourning a daughter whose future was stolen in a senseless act of violence.
