Investigators now say those claims were fiction.
Military records reportedly show that Rush never received pilot training and held no FAA pilot certifications. Rather than serving as a decorated military aviator, records indicate his Navy service was in information technology. Officials say he entered military service in 1997, transitioned to the reserves in 2004, and left the service in 2015 as a lieutenant.
Federal authorities also allege that Rush falsely claimed academic credentials from Clemson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
When investigators contacted the schools, officials reportedly found no evidence that he had attended either institution.
Despite those alleged misrepresentations, Rush rose through the federal bureaucracy and eventually achieved Senior Executive Service status, one of the highest levels available to civilian government employees. He also gained access to highly classified intelligence programs through Top Secret/SCI clearance.
What investigators discovered next has shocked Washington.
According to court filings, Rush allegedly submitted multiple requests to the CIA between late 2025 and early 2026 seeking enormous quantities of gold bars and foreign currency. The requests were reportedly justified as official business expenses.
When agency officials later attempted to track the assets, investigators say they encountered serious discrepancies and could not determine where the valuables had gone.
That led to an FBI search of Rush’s home on May 18.
What agents allegedly found inside was staggering.
Federal authorities report recovering 303 one-kilogram gold bars with an estimated value exceeding $40 million.
Investigators also seized approximately $2 million in cash along with 35 luxury watches, including numerous Rolex timepieces.
Rush was arrested the following day.
A federal judge ordered him detained pending further proceedings, and a detention hearing has been scheduled in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Court documents further allege that Rush’s misconduct extended well beyond the recent gold transactions.
Prosecutors claim he embezzled government property over a period stretching back to 2009. They also accuse him of improperly collecting military leave benefits after his military service had ended.
According to investigators, Rush fraudulently claimed 744 hours of military leave following his 2015 discharge, resulting in roughly $77,000 in unauthorized payments.
The case is already fueling criticism from conservatives who argue that the scandal exposes deep flaws inside federal institutions that routinely demand accountability from everyone except themselves.
Critics are asking a simple question: How does someone allegedly fabricate military achievements, educational credentials, and professional experience for years while gaining access to some of the nation’s most guarded intelligence programs?
Many point out that basic verification procedures could have uncovered major discrepancies long before Rush reached senior leadership positions.
The controversy has also drawn attention to the role of CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
According to reports, Ratcliffe initiated an internal review that uncovered the alleged wrongdoing and referred the matter to federal law enforcement authorities.
Supporters argue the investigation demonstrates the importance of aggressive oversight and accountability inside agencies that often operate far from public view.
For many Americans, however, the most troubling aspect of the story may not be the gold bars, luxury watches, or stacks of cash.
